SIGNS OF SCAMS:

  • “OTC desks demand proof of coin or proof of funds before trading.”

  • This was popularized by scammers and hackers as a method of identifying potential targets. Reputable OTC desks would never provide this as it would deanonymize their clients’ wallets. Nor will they ever request private financial information that wasn’t strictly necessary for the trade at hand. - Hackernoon

-------------------------------------

  • Ronin, the Ethereum sidechain powering the Axie Infinity P2E game.

  • Ronin was hacked.

💰 Amount → $625 million (the biggest ever hack of a blockchain)

  • And Ronin had just → 9 validators. 🥶

If the number of validators = the number of billions of market cap, it's not good bruh!

That’s ☝️ what resulted in the hack.

In March 2022, the hacker group Lazarus took over 5 (of the 9) validator keys in the most INSANE way possible:

1️⃣ Hackers reached out to Sky Mavis’ engineers on LinkedIn to “hire” them
2️⃣ One engineer replied, did interviews, and was given a job offer
3️⃣ When he opened the job offer PDF, his computer was infected with spyware
4️⃣ Lazarus accessed his computer + broke into Ronin’s infra
    5️⃣ Accessed 5 outta 9 validators, stole $625 million

This ☝️ is exactly what Sky Mavis is tryna solve, making Ronin:

🔺 more decentralized
🔻 less vulnerable

The model they’re going with is → Delegated Proof Of Stake (DPoS) consensus.

Wtf is DPoS? IDK, so here's what Google said:
Delegated Proof of Stake is where users of the network vote and elect delegates to validate the next block. Validators pool tokens into staking pools and link them to delegates.

This will allow users to:

Stake RON (the native token of Ronin) → Earn more tokens → Appoint validators → Validate transactions → Secure the network.

Mixing (crypto laundering), Scams and Darknet Markets:

" Attached is the forensics report on the xxxx BTC wallet. This report was done by experts in the field.

In sum, the wallet itself and its owner may be legit, however the forensics raised a red flag: a significant source of the coins come from wallets related to mixing (crypto laundering), scams and darknet markets. In other words, the risk is high that our buyer would not be able to offload these coins on the open market."
